There are two basic types of forehead wrinkles: vertical and horizontal. Vertical
wrinkles appear just above your nose and between your eyebrows. In the medical world,
they’re known as glabellar lines, although most people refer to them as “frown lines.”
Horizontal wrinkles—the creases that form over the frontalis muscle—appear slightly
higher and run across the entire forehead.

What causes forehead wrinkles to form?
The forehead is particularly susceptible to the formation of wrinkles. That’s
because it has dynamic lines—ones that form when you smile, frown, become surprised,
or otherwise move your facial muscles. Over time as our skin is damaged with sun
exposure, these dynamic lines become more prominent, forming permanent furrows.
This permanence usually occurs with age, as your skin loses collagen and elastin,
the two proteins that plump it up and keep it smooth and youthful-looking. Exposure
to sunlight is an important factor in this process, for UV rays from the sun speed
up the damage of collagen and elastin. Some people inherit a tendency toward forehead
wrinkles and develop them at a very early age—even when still in their 20s.
Dynamic forehead lines can appear more pronounced if you have a very emotive face—in
other words, by smiling, frowning, or squinting a lot.
Can forehead wrinkles be corrected?
The goal of any treatment should be to give the skin on the forehead a smooth,
relaxed appearance while maintaining some natural movement to the area. In severe
cases, forehead wrinkles can be permanently corrected with a surgical procedure
known as a brow lift. But other, less invasive procedures are now available. Today,
forehead wrinkles are most often treated with an injectable wrinkle relaxer (such
as Botox or Dysport), a dermal filler (such as Restylane, Perlane, or Radiesse),
or a combination of both. The wrinkle relaxers cause the muscles under the wrinkles
to relax, thus smoothing out the overlying skin. The dermal fillers are used to
fill in the crevices in the skin caused by the wrinkles. These treatments may last
for months, but will need to be repeated to retain their effects.
