Lip Augmentation and Enhancement

  • What causes lips to thin?
  • Can fullness be restored to thin lips?
  • Your genes determine the shape and fullness of your lips. Some people are born with fuller lips than others. But no matter how full your lips are in your youth, they will thin and flatten as you age. The process can start as early as your 30s.

    What causes lips to thin?

With age, lips begin to lose collagen, the protein that helps plump them up and give them their fullness. This loss of collagen also causes the V-shaped area of the upper lips (sometimes called the “Cupid’s Bow”) to thin and flatten. In addition, the corners of the mouth begin to turn downwards, a development that can give your face a slightly stern appearance.

Of course, aging also causes vertical lines to appear above and below the lips—particularly if you’ve spent a lot of time out in the sun or if you’ve been a smoker.

Can fullness be restored to thin lips?

Yes. A variety of safe and effective dermal fillers are available for enhancing your lips’ shape and their size—and for reducing the appearance of any vertical “puckering” lines around them. These products are made with several different kinds of ingredients, including a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance that occurs naturally within your skin. Although these treatments aren’t permanent, they last for a number of months.
