Nasolabial Folds

  • What causes nasolabial folds to deepen?
  • Can nasolabial folds be corrected?
  • Nasolabial folds (from the Latin nasus for “nose” and labium for “lip”) are the two skin folds that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Not only are these furrows among the first to appear on the aging face, they also are among the most challenging to correct. Usually they begin to deepen when people hit their 40s, although people with prominent cheek bones can develop them at an earlier age.

What causes nasolabial folds to deepen?

Aging decreases the skin’s supply of collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its structural support and elasticity. As skin thins, it sags. As a result, facial lines become more pronounced, especially the nasolabial ones. Cheek fat also loses volume, which causes the skin over the cheeks to droop—a factor that contributes to the deepening of the nasolabial lines. The entire process can be accentuated by a lifetime of overexposure to the sun—and by genetic factors. You may have inherited a tendency to develop deep nasolabial lines at a younger age.

    Can nasolabial folds be corrected?

A full or partial face-lift is the most permanent—and most invasive—treatment. In recent years, however, temporary dermal fillers have become a much more popular non-surgical alternative. These fillers help replace lost volume, plumping up the skin. Some even encourage new collagen to form. Many of the modern fillers approved by the Food and Drug Administration are hypoallergenic (thus no risk of allergic reaction) and long lasting. These treatments also require no down time. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately.
