Sculptra restores volume to the skin, thus correcting defects—deep folds, hollowed
cheeks, sunken eyes, and chin indents—caused by the loss of facial fat (lipoatrophy).
It’s the first product of its kind approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
for restoring lost facial fat in people with human immunodeficiency virus.
Because of its effectiveness in augmenting the chin, cheeks, and other large facial
areas, Radiesse has received FDA approval for restoring and correcting signs of
facial lipoatrophy (loss of subcutaneous fat) in people with the human immunodeficiency
virus.
Sculptra has not received FDA approval for any other types of cosmetic treatments.
How does it work?
When injected under the skin, Sculptra triggers a gradual and significant increase
in the skin’s volume. As the skin thickens, the folds and sunken areas on its surface
“fill out” and become less visible. Sculptra also stimulates the formation of new
collagen, the protein that gives skin its structure, thereby further increasing
its volume.
Sculptra doesn’t treat the cause of the facial fat loss, but it does reverse its
effects. It gives the face healthier and more youthful-looking contours.
What is the treatment like?
A Sculptra treatment takes less than 30 minutes; you can return to your daily
routine afterward.
Although a very fine needle will be used, the injections may sting a bit. You’ll
be given a topical numbing cream or, possibly, a local anesthetic to minimize any
discomfort. After the injections, the treated area will be massaged thoroughly to
make sure the filler is spread evenly under the skin.
Expect some minor side effects—redness, swelling, pain, and bruising; these will
go away within a few hours or they may linger for a few days. For several days you
should massage the treated area several times daily and apply ice packs. Also, avoid
direct sun until the initial swelling and redness have disappeared.
Some people who are treated with Sculptra develop small bumps, or nodules, under
the skin that may or may not be visible. These bumps may first appear weeks after
treatment. Sometimes they go away on their own, but other times they must be removed
surgically.
How long do the treatments last?
Although Sculptra’s results are long lasting (up to 2 years in most people), they
are not immediate. However, you may think you’re seeing immediate results because
of the swelling
